Songs That Resonate: “Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder”

music2You ever have a 48 hours like this?

You’ve gotten in a argument with your significant other, neither of you gives in, so it smolders on for too long.

You’re eating a gooey brownie to ease the maelstrom of conflicted feelings. You bite into something crunchy, reach in your mouth and pull out a gold crown, wondering how the hell the baker’s tooth got in the batter. When you then realize it’s your tooth that’s severed at the gum line.

So you make an appointment with the dentist the following morning. But you have to postpone it until later in the day, so you can meet the plumber. Because, while washing clothes, a drainage line backed up, flooding the floor and a good area rug. Also backing up in the kitchen sink.

When you finally get to the dentist, she advises you need an implant. And she insists you see a certain periodontist whose office is as far on the other side of the county as possible.

Oh yes, his first available appointment is five weeks away.

Did I mention I had to cancel a lunch appointment of long standing with an old pal because it conflicted with the rescheduled dentist visit?

That kind of chaotic, not so much fun 48 hours?

Well, I just did.

While contemplating the $3 large this new fake tooth is going to cost, and what it means for summer vacation plans, I get in the car to drive to grab some suitably unhealthy lunch to navigate the maelstrom of feelings.

At which point the perfect song comes on the radio.

Quicksilver Messenger Service’s “Edward the Mad Shirt Grinder.” Nicky Hopkins going maniacal on the keyboards after a slow, lingering set up. The song inexorably spinning out of control. Until it eventually rhythmically and melodically falls apart. As if it’s ended up a black hole.

The perfect song for the moment, bringing a smile to my face
